Writing from the wormhole
Upcoming shows and Reiki for creative flow
I come to you from the wormhole still. Feeling scattered, slow with these staggered bursts of energy, body desperate to sleep, mind furiously chasing the list of things that [don’t] have to get done [yet] as I step out of one self and into the next.
When wading through the in-between, I return to my writing as refuge and retreat.
Life offered me a kindness this season by lining up three poetry readings to write for in May: Mother on Mic and two showcases at NW Folklife. I love everything about preparing for a performance—the furious scribbling in my journal, the meditative typing of said scribbles (often illegible), the tortuous task of editing a whole season of feeling down to minutes, the rehearsing, relentless, until I find the breath that makes the set ring true.
One unique challenge of writing for performance is to not let the performance aspect seep in too early. I am constantly struggling to stay with the creative inspiration. To surrender fully to the feeling, letting it flow through me until the wave’s complete, without damming up its beauty with my ego’s need for applause.
Reiki and meditation have been instrumental to this practice of getting out of my own way, which is why I’m so excited to be sharing these tools with other artists at my upcoming workshop, Reiki for Creative Expression, at the Side Rail Collective on Sunday, April 26. Side Rail is another creative home for me in Georgetown—the community I often share my first drafts with. I am delighted to bring my other offerings into this space.
